Importance of Estate Planning & Post-Election Market Outlook

This year has had its challenges and with it has come new perspectives on life and purposeful living. For many, this may have included incorporating more balance between self-care, home and work. Others became more involved in their own communities through volunteering or supporting causes. Our nation’s heroes continued to work – even more hours than before – to keep us safe, to provide medical and lifesaving care, to keep our stores stocked and deliveries fulfilled, or to ensure that children and youth did not lose a step in their education. Finally, many, if not all, may have realized the importance of making each day count and in planning for the future.

The CFV was proud to recently offer its first one-hour educational webinar, The Importance of Estate Planning and a Post-Election Market Outlook, as a free learning experience. This webinar covered the basics of planning an estate as well as a snapshot of historic and possible future market activity. An estate plan is really for everyone – particularly if you live in California. By making plans in advance you not only ensure your own well-being, but you ensure that your assets and all that you have worked for are available for those close to you, including charities that you hold dear to your heart. By planning ahead, you not only add strength to your future, but you help to build a more resilient and healthy community.

Congratulations to Mary Pinola – 2020 Exemplary Leadership Honoree
The CFV extends a happy “congratulations” to Mary Pinola on receiving Business Life Magazine’s 2020 Exemplary Leadership Honoree Award!This year’s presentation was in conjunction with the magazine’s annual Women Achievers Awards held virtually. Ms. Pinola was behind the establishment of the Mary Pinola/Crescenta Valley Chamber Education Fund, a donor advised fund, with the CFV back in 1991. At that time, the Fund’s starting balance was $1,200; today, Mary Pinola and the Fund’s Advisory Board grant out well-over $20,000 annually toward nonprofits and schools for educational needs. Under Ms. Pinola’s energetic leadership, the Fund is continually growing through donations and proceeds from its well-known Smart-a-Thon event. If you wish to celebrate Mary Pinola on her award, please consider making a gift in her honor which will go directly toward the Education Fund!

Remembering Eric Ashton, Sr., Community Leader
We are deeply saddened at the passing of Eric Arthur Ashton Sr., father of CFV Board member Eric A. Ashton Jr., and send our most sincere condolences to his family.

Mr. Ashton, a well-known attorney, community leader, and business developer in the City of Glendale, was also a former member of the CFV Board of Directors. He was, in fact, among the early leaders of the Foundation and had supported the CFV for decades in numerous ways. He and his late wife Gloria “Joanne” also maintained The Ashton Family Donor Advised Fund with the Foundation.

The Ashton Family has requested that in lieu of flowers, gifts may be made in memory of Mr. Ashton to the Ashton Family Fund in order that good works may continue in the community. We are humbled in our sadness to know that the Ashton Family is keeping the Foundation in their thoughts at this time and are honored to assist in helping others to remember Mr. Ashton through a special gift.

Mary Pinola/Crescenta Valley Chamber of Commerce Education Fund

Grant Applications Now Open to Foothill Nonprofits

The Mary Pinola/Crescenta Valley Chamber of Commerce Education Fund provides grants for educational programs or projects in the Crescenta Valley. This year as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, a priority is placed on helping meet educational needs associated with virtual learning, understanding and applying current scientific findings for healthy living, and maintaining supportive community connection despite restricted social gatherings and interactions.

This 2020 Grant Application process is open from September 1 through 5 p.m., October 2.

The Education Fund is a donor advised fund managed by the Community Foundation of the Verdugos (CFV); the Education Fund’s grant cycle is a separate process from that of the CFV’s annual cycle which takes place during the summer months.

Applying for a Mary Pinola & Crescenta Valley Chamber Education Fund Grant and a Community Foundation of the Verdugos Grant is allowed as long as the applying organization meets the parameters outlined in the application.

An Important Message to Our Community

The Community Foundation of the Verdugos (CFV) has been proud to be a part of the philanthropic work in the Verdugo region for almost 65 years. Since Covid-19 turned all of our lives upside-down, the importance of a community foundation cannot be overstated. We look forward to sharing stories about the support the CFV has been able to provide nonprofits who are working on the front lines to address food insecurities, shelter, physical and mental health issues, and economic fallout from this pandemic.

But, there is yet again a new crisis. Individuals across the country are demonstrating in response to the appalling deaths of people of color. We sadly feel this grief. We share in the frustration and pain through recognition of peaceful demonstrations. We stand with those working toward a more equitable community.

Foundation Status in Response to the Covid-19 Pandemic

The Community Foundation of the Verdugos (CFV) is providing this update in response to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.

To ensure that the health of donors, grantees, community-at-large, board members and staff is at the forefront, the Foundation office remains closed to the public in response to California’s “Safer at Home” Policy. The CFV continues to monitor Los Angeles County Public Health’s communication on the Covid-19 pandemic as well as that of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Although the physical office remains closed (as of this June/July 2020 posting), staff are working remotely and intermittently in the office for key areas of service between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. If possible, please do not leave phone messages; instead, using the emails below will provide you with a more timely response to any query:

An Urgent Message to our
Friends with Donor Advised Funds

Whether you have a donor advised fund (DAF) with the Community Foundation of the Verdugos (CFV) or with any number of financial institutions such as Vanguard, Schwab, Fidelity, etc., time is now urgent for your local support! The CFV COVID-19 Response Fund has been activated by the Foundation to provide flexible and immediate board-designated support to nonprofits in the Verdugo region.

DAF holders with the Foundation can make an immediate grant to the CFV COVID-19 Response Fund by emailing Edna@cfverdugos.org.

Those with DAFs at other institutions may make a direct grant to the CFV (Tax ID EIN#95-6068137) and restrict its use for the CFV COVID-19 Response Fund. Mail checks to Community Foundation of the Verdugos, 111 East Broadway, Suite 200, Glendale, CA, 91205.

2020 Grant Applications Restricted to Mental Health Needs

Community Foundation of the Verdugos’ upcoming 2020 Grant Cycle will be restricted to nonprofits in the mental health and social services fields. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Foundation’s Board has directed to address mental health needs in the Verdugo region as these will be among the top lingering effects from this global tragedy.
The deadline for applying is midnight, June 1.

CFV Annual Meeting: One Starfish – Countless Ripples…Resilience!

Starfish and Resilience? They are closer than you think! For those who attended the Community Foundation of the Verdugos’ annual meeting, “One Starfish – Countless Ripples … Resilience!”, they surprisingly learned that when a starfish is cut in half, or loses a limb, everything grows back.
